Steenkamp took few breaths after head wound - Sapa
Model Reeva Steenkamp drew a few breaths after she was shot in the head by her boyfriend Oscar Pistorius, the High Court in Pretoria heard on Monday.
Saayman described the wound to her head as an incapacitating wound, and said there was physical damage to the brain because of a substantial fracture to the base of the skull.
However, both the injuries to her arm and her right groin or hip area could have been fatal as well, he said.
Her right hip bone was shattered and this was likely to cause immediate instability, he explained.
He said Steenkamp would have collapsed and, unless she had something to grip onto, it would have been difficult to get back up.
It was also an incapacitating injury that if not operated on immediately could be fatal. He said there was a 50/50 chance of surviving the injury.
He described the wound to Steenkamp's arm as devastating. Her right arm was shattered, leaving it with no functionality.
Saayman said any of the head, arm or groin injuries could have caused her death because she needed urgent medical assistance to survive them.
Saayman said an independent pathologist appointed by the Pistorius family was present during his autopsy.
Steenkamp had little urine in bladder - Sapa
A post mortem report revealed that not much liquid was found in Reeva Steenkamp's bladder after she was shot dead, the High Court in Pretoria heard on Monday.
It was about a teaspoon-full, said Professor Gert Saayman, who had conducted the autopsy on Steenkamp a day after she was shot and killed by her boyfriend, Oscar Pistorius.
Saayman said about 200ml of partially digested food, mainly vegetables with whitish cheese-like particles were found in Steenkamp's stomach.
Steenkamp had eaten about two hours prior to her death.
Saayman examined her after the fatal shooting at his Pretoria home in the early hours of Valentine's Day in 2013.
Witnesses have testified they heard screams and shots from the direction of his home after 3am.
He has admitted that he shot four times and killed the law graduate and model through the closed door of a toilet cubicle in his bathroom.
He said he thought there was an intruder in the house and has pleaded not guilty to murder, which the State alleges was premeditated and during an argument.
Saayman gave a lengthy explanation of the factors that affect a conclusion on a last meal.
He said digestion time depended on the type of food eaten, with proteins taking the longest and leaving the stomach slowly, carbohydrates taking less time, and fluids passing through quickly.
The volume of food also affected this.
A small volume such as a light meal or snack, would probably be emptied from the stomach within 90 to 180 mins completely.
A more substantial medium meal takes 2 to 4 hours and a big meal of 1.5kg or more may remain in the stomach for as long as six hours.
Gastric emptying stopped when a person died, he said, and the food in the stomach remained there.
Steenkamp said no abnormalities were found in her stomach.
Her heart, however, just like her liver, was pale in colour as a result of blood loss, said Saayman.
Pistorius used expanding bullet: expert - Sapa
The bullets fired from Oscar Pistorius's gun which killed Reeva Steenkamp are known as expanding bullets, the High Court in Pretoria heard on Monday.
They were designed to cause maximum tissue damage, pathologist Professor Gert Saayman said.
Such a bullet caused major damage, opening up when striking human tissue.
Doctors knew to be careful when dealing with such wounds because they could cut themselves on the projectile.
Pistorius sat in the dock with his head down and hands covering his face.
He closed his ears and gagged as Saayman gave graphical evidence.
Steenkamp had a blue discoloration on her inner right buttocks that could have been caused from the bullet wound to her right hip.
"But no projectile could be found," said Saayman.
There was also a reddish bruise on the right nipple.
The court heard that Steenkamp had a few bruises on her body that were not as a result of the shooting.
Her upper eyelids were blue-reddish and there was soft tissue swelling but no injury to the eyes.
This was not caused by direct trauma but a fracture to the skull.
As Saayman explained that it could have been blood leaking from the skull Pistorius retched loudly.
There were also bruises on the upper part of the right thigh that were not linked to the shooting and behind the left knee and the left shin.

Oscar Pistorius retched loudly in the dock as the cold details of tissue damage, bone fragments and lesions on his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp's body were explained to the High Court in Pretoria on Monday.

Pistorius had already been granted a short adjournment when he broke down as pathologist Professor Gert Saayman started going through the two and a half page pathology report on Steenkamp's body after Pistorius shot her on February 14 2013.

"The wounds were caused by multiple small fragments. There was bruising in skin around the wounds, there was also bluish discolouration surrounding the wounds."
Steenkamp was wearing grey Nike shorts and a black vest when shot. Pistorius pressed his hands on his ears.
Flipping through a file of photographs, Saayman described penetrating injuries and superficial abrasions in a brisk manner.
He had successfully asked that his evidence not be broadcast live for the dignity of Steenkamp's family, or in case vulnerable people or children may hear or see it. He did not object to filtered or paraphrased reports such as those in the print media.
Masipa ordered that there be no live feed, Twitter, or blogging. The media's lawyer said editors would agree on a package to use later.
Small tissue fragments were distributed over the front of the vest. Over her torso were scattered remnants of tissue and fragments of bone.
He spoke of splinters.
Steenkamp was shot in the toilet cubicle in a bathroom at Pistorius's home in Pretoria. He said he later broke the door down with a cricket bat to free her.
Pistorius has been charged with the premeditated murder of Steenkamp and to charges of contravening the Firearms Act.
He contends that he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder when he shot her, and has pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

Masipa clarifies Oscar media order - Sapa
Judge Thokozile Masipa clarified her ruling on evidence by the pathologist testifying in Oscar Pistorius's murder trial in the High Court in Pretoria on Monday.
"The press can go on and do their work but it is not allowed to be live," she said.
There had been confusion over whether pathologist Gert Saayman's direct quotes were allowed to be used by print media and a request was made during the lunch adjournment to Lulama Luti, spokeswoman for the office of the Chief Justice, to clear this up.
"Can they paraphrase? The question is what are they allowed to do, the print media, the other media?" asked Gerrie Nel on the State's behalf.
"I hope it's clear...it's not supposed to be live, you can paraphrase, summarise, that is it," said Masipa.
That applied to radio, television and print.
No tweeting or blogging was allowed either of his evidence.
Pistorius, who was Steenkamp's boyfriend, is on trial for her murder.
He shot her through a locked bathroom door at his Pretoria home on Valentine's Day last year.
He claimed to have mistaken her for an intruder.
The State, however, argues that it was premeditated murder.

At 1.50pm Pistorius returned to court, with his briefcase and wet wipes in hand. He sat in the dock with his head down ahead of proceedings.

The court heard Steenkamp's body was naked when it was brought in for the post mortem and her clothes were brought in along with the body.

He said there was a grouping of abrasions, superficial fractures, on the skin of Steenkamp's torso.
He said a close-up view of injuries showed they were not penetrating injuries.
Steenkamp sustained a gunshot wound to her right hip, 92cm from the ground. He said a defect he had seen on Steenkamp's pants was in line with this wound.
Steenkamp also sustained injuries to her left groin but these were superficial small abrasions, possibly caused by wooden splinters, said Saayman.
The court has already heard that Pistorius shot through a bathroom door. His defence submitted that he broke the bathroom door down with a cricket bat to get to Steenkamp.
Saayman also spoke of a wound that he noted on Steenkamp's left hand that was between her second and third finger.

Pistorius interlaced his hands behind his head and sobbed as Professor Gert Saayman described how a bullet entered Steenkamp's head in the right upper part, and ran under the skull before it exited from a second wound in the head.
The paralympian athlete's defence lawyer Barry Roux asked for a pause to allow his client to compose himself, then told Judge Thokozile Masipa the testimony could continue.
"He is very emotional. It is not going to change... He says he is willing that the evidence must proceed."
When Saayman resumed his testimony and described how the bullet had shattered portions of bone in Steenkamp's skull, Pistorius blocked his ears and gagged.
Before the pathologist took the stand, Masipa banned live broadcasts of his testimony at his request.
Saayman said the explicit nature of testimony would almost certainly compromise the dignity of the deceased.
However, print media were allowed to remain in court and report it.
"Let me apologise for the inconvenience I may have caused," Saayman told the High Court in Pretoria, where Pistorius's trial is now in its second week.
Saayman said he was bound by ethical rules and would be uncomfortable with live unfiltered streaming of his evidence.
"I think that the very personal nature of findings that are made at an autopsy examination as well as the very graphic details... have the potential to compromise the dignity of the deceased and... I believe it is our duty to preserve the dignity of the deceased."
It would be unfair to make such explicit information indiscriminately available to vulnerable viewers, like children, he added.
"I think it goes against the good morals of society to make information of the nature available to vulnerable and unsuspecting people such as children if they are not timeously informed."
The trial is receiving unprecedented media coverage and Saayman has been the first witness to object to his testimony being aired live, though others have refused to have their faces shown on television and only allowed their voices to be aired.
Saayman said he had no objection to print media coverage of his testimony, because "it would be paraphrased or filtered and people could choose to disengage".
After Pistorius's defence raised the issue, the judge also banned reporters from issuing immediate Twitter and blogsite on the testimony.
"There shall be no live broadcast now.... That [also] applies to Twitter."
Later she added: "When I referred to Twitter I failed to refer to blogging as well. So Twitter is not allowed, blogging is not allowed."
Masipa rejected, at the urging of both the State and the defence, a proposal by the media that they be allowed to air segments of the testimony later, if those chosen met with the approval of the court.
Constitutional law expert Pierre de Vos criticised the court ruling, as confusing and impracticable.
"It sounds unenforceable. I wasn't there to hear her [the judge's] exact words, but in other court cases, people and journalists use Twitter so I don't know why they are doing this in this case. What makes this case so special?"
The court has already heard graphic accounts of Steenkamp's injuries from neighbours and from Roux, who said the severe brain damage caused by a head wound meant their testimony that they heard her cry for help was not feasible.
Roux has relentlessly questioned the credibility of all State witnesses, and so was the case on Monday morning with security guard Pieter Baba, who was on duty at Pistorius's townhouse complex on the night he shot Steenkamp.
Baba told the court Pistorius sobbed but said everything was "fine" when the guard called him shortly after the shooting. Pistorius called back a short while later and sobbed wordlessly, Baba said.
Roux produced cellphone records which he argued proved that in fact Pistorius had made the first call.
"Pistorius called you first at 3.21am, and he will tell the court that he could not speak and very shortly after that at 3.22am you called him back to find out if he is all right," Roux said.
"My Lady, this is not true that he called me first, I called him first. I am the one who made that first call to him."
As with other witnesses, Roux suggested that Baba had over time amended his recollection to incriminate Pistorius. He had contradicted himself on the details he noticed when he arrived at Pistorius's home and saw him carry Steenkamp down the stairs.
Again, Baba firmly disagreed. He pointed Roux to his exact testimony on Friday, and suggested any misunderstanding was the lawyer's.
Reeva Steenkamp also sustained bruising to her back, buttocks and breast - Sapa
Model and law graduate Reeva Steenkamp sustained bruising to her back, buttocks and breast, the High Court in Pretoria heard on Monday.
Pathologist Gert Saayman said Steenkamp had two scratches on her back. This could have been caused by a blunt object or shrapnel.
Her right buttock was bluish in colour. Saayman said this could have stemmed from the injury that Steenkamp had sustained on her right hip, where a bullet had penetrated.
There was some reddish discoloration on her right nipple, said Saayman.
He said this could have been caused by frictional contact.
Pistorius gagged as Saayman delivered his evidence.

Pistorius judge cuts live broadcast until further notice - Sapa
The judge in Oscar Pistorius's murder trial ordered that the live feed of proceedings be cut because of the graphic testimony of the pathologist about to give evidence on his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp's injuries.
"There shall be no live broadcast now... that applies to Twitter," said Judge Thokozile Masipa.

The pathologist due to testify on Reeva Steenkamp's fatal gunshot wounds objected to his evidence being broadcast live from Oscar Pistorius's murder trial in the High Court in Pretoria on Monday.
"Let me apologise for the inconvenience I may have caused," said Professor Gert Saayman.
He said he is bound by certain ethical rules and there might be statutory limits to his conduct. He said he would not be comfortable with live unfiltered streaming of his evidence.
"I think that the very personal nature of findings that are made at an autopsy examination as well as the very graphic details... have the potential to compromise the dignity of the deceased and... I believe it is our duty to preserve the dignity of the deceased," he said.
It was "almost inevitable" that there would be an infringement on the rights of remaining relatives and friends of deceased.
"I think it goes against the good morals of society to make information of the nature available to vulnerable and unsuspecting people such as children if they are not timeously informed," he said.
"In time, the information could be made available, but it would be paraphrased or filtered and people could choose to disengage."
The court has already heard graphic detail, which has left Pistorius tearful and hunching into himself in the dock, his hands over his ears.
Some of Steenkamp's friends were in the court, as were Pistorius's family.
Last week, the court heard from Barry Roux, SC, for Pistorius, that Steenkamp's injuries were so severe that it could not have been her screaming for help, after witnesses testified hearing a woman screaming on the morning she was killed.
He said the shot to her head left her with "severe" brain damage and no cognitive function.
The State seeks to have Judge Thokozile Masipa and assessors Janet Henzen-du Toit and Themba Mazibuko agree with its allegation that she was killed in an argument in an act of pre-meditated murder.
Last week, radiologist Johan Stipp, a neighbour who was one of the first to arrive after the shooting, said Steenkamp's eyes were cloudy, a sign that life was fading from her body.
Stipp gave a graphic account of how Steenkamp's brain matter was stuck to her hair.
Pistorius is charged with murdering Steenkamp on February 14 2013 at his home in Silver Woods, Pretoria.
He has pleaded not guilty and has said he thought there was an intruder in the toilet cubicle when he fired four shots, killing her.
Prayers for Pistorius - Sapa
One by one, relatives of Oscar Pistorius headed to the dock where they prayed for the murder-accused star as he showed distress during Monday's proceedings in the High Court in Pretoria.
During an adjournment his family huddled around him, holding his hand, and hugging him.
Pistorius broke down and buried his head in his hands as the court was told that the evidence of a witness, professor Gert Saayman, would be too graphic to publicise.
The State requested that an order be granted for the audio of the proceedings to not be broadcast on radio or television.
Saayman was to testify on the autopsy that was conducted on Reeva Steenkamp, Pistorius's girlfriend.
He shot her dead through a locked bathroom door at his Pretoria home. He said he had mistaken her for an intruder.
Pistorius's ex-girlfriend, Samantha Taylor, and her mother, Patricia Ann Taylor, stared at him as he cried in the dock.
Taylor testified in the trial last week. She alleged that Pistorius had fired a gun in her presence before.
The 20-year-old who started dating Pistorius three years ago said they broke up after Pistorius cheated on her with Steenkamp.
Patricia Ann Taylor was also expected to testify in the trial.
Women dressed in ANC Women's League regalia were also in court on Monday.
Some of them sat in the bench reserved for the Steenkamp family.
Spokeswoman for the League, Jacqui Mofokeng, handed out stickers bearing an image of Steenkamp.
Last week, Gauteng premier Nomvula Mokonyane called for support for the grieving Steenkamp family.
Also in the front of the court were friends of Steenkamp. They too wore the stickers on their clothes.
The President of Crime Stoppers International, Alex McDonald, and his second vice-president, Yusuf Abramjee, also attended the proceedings.
While the court had earlier appeared less filled, it was almost packed to capacity by the adjournment.
State does not want public post mortem - Sapa
The State on Monday asked to make a special application that graphic forensic evidence on Reeva Steenkamp's injuries not be broadcast in Oscar Pistorius's murder trial in the High Court in Pretoria.
Prosecutor Gerrie Nel made the application as professor Gert Saayman took the witness stand to testify on the pathological findings on Steenkamp who was shot in the arm, head and thigh by Pistorius on February 14, 2013.
"The professor will give evidence on the graphic nature of the injuries," said Nel to Judge Thokozile Masipa.
He said the application to not broadcast the evidence was not about press freedom, but to respect the dignity of Steenkamp and her family and friends.
He said the defence supported the application that the audio was not "sent into the whole wide world".
Pistorius laced his fingers behind his neck and bowed his head and pulled his body down while this exchange took place.
His counsel Barry Roux said: "We don't believe that the public interest should be more important in this case."
The media's lawyers would be part of the submission and court adjourned for them to arrive.
It was not yet clear how the application would affect media in the court.

Baba testified that he called Pistorius, who told him that "everything was fine".
Baba reiterated his statement that he called the paralympian first.
"My Lady, this is not true that he called me first, I called him first. I am the one who made that first call to him."

Murder-accused paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius's trial will enter its second week on Monday in the High Court in Pretoria.
Last week, a number of witnesses underwent often tenacious cross-examination by defence lawyer Barry Roux SC, as well as questioning by prosecutor Gerrie Nel, as the court began to piece together the events of February 14 2013.
Pistorius has admitted that he shot his then-girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in the early hours of Valentines Day, but claims he believed he was targeting an intruder when he fired four shots into a locked bathroom door at his Pretoria home. The blonde model was wounded in the arm, leg and head and died on the scene.
The final witness last week, Pieter Baba, the chief security guard at Pistorius's townhouse complex, told the court that when he phoned Pistorius after a neighbour reported hearing gunfire, Pistorius had told him everything was fine, although he could be heard crying.
Ex-girlfriend, Samantha Taylor, portrayed the double amputee as an argumentative man who constantly carried his handgun and slept with it loaded by his side.
Earlier in the week, three of Pistorius's neighbours told the court they were woken around 3am by a woman's cries, followed by gunshots.
One of the neighbours, radiologist Johan Stipp, said when he went to Pistorius's home to see if he could help, he found the 27-year-old crying and praying next to a dying Steenkamp.
Three witnesses also gave testimony about a separate incident in which a gun went off, allegedly in Pistorius's hand, in a packed Johannesburg restaurant a month before Steenkamp's death.
Pistorius has pleaded not guilty to the charge of premeditated murder and to charges of contravening the Firearms Act.
He has denied that the couple argued earlier on the night of the shooting.
Nel has told the court that since there were no eye witnesses to the event, the State would be relying on circumstantial and forensic evidence.
