ANC MP Crosby Moni has died after a short illness, the Office of the ANC Chief Whip said on Monday.

"We are deeply pained by the loss of such an experienced politician, a humble people's servant and an outstanding activist," spokesman Moloto Mothapo said of Moni's death on Sunday

Moni joined Parliament in 2011 and represented the constituency of Benoni, on the East Rand.

He was a former deputy president of the National Union of Mineworkers, a member of the SA Communist Party's central committee, provincial deputy chairman of the African National Congress in Mpumalanga, and was instrumental in rebuilding SA National Civic Organisation structures.

"Comrade Moni's political activism cut across the entire revolutionary tripartite alliance, having held leadership positions within all the structures of the alliance formations," Mothapo said.

Moni is survived by his wife, three sons and two daughters.
