DAGGA found stashed underneath a chalkboard was among several items seized during random police searches at two Gauteng schools yesterday.

Police at Ekangala, near Bronkhorstspruit, made unannounced visits to the local Sithjejiwe and Strauss secondary schools.

They were assisted by a sniffer dog in conducting the searches in the schools' senior classes' classrooms.

The raids started at Sithjejiwe during the first period and police targeted Grade 10 classes, where they found four matchboxes containing dagga and three tiny plastic bags also containing dagga, as well as cellphones that had allegedly been stolen.

Constable Zanele Vilakazi said that the fourth matchbox containing dagga was "found stashed underneath the chalkboard just below where they keep the duster (eraser). Bubble gum was used to attach the box to the chalkboard".

Police said apart from a live bullet that was hidden inside a Zam-Buk ointment container, no dangerous weapons were found.

Vilakazi said there were no arrests made and no pupils were found in possession of dagga.

She said the children had a large number of cellphones in their possession. "We found four of the cellphones stashed in rubbish bins inside the classroom."

She said they hid them "because they know they are not supposed to have cellphones during school hours. We also found a pupil with a 20 pack of cigarettes."

At Strauss Secondary School the police found about 20 cellphones belonging to the pupils.

Vilakazi described yesterday's raids as successful, saying they intended conducting them on a weekly basis and visiting different schools.
