Members of the popular dance group V.I.N.T.A.G.E were allegedly assaulted by a group of men who are believed to be taxi drivers.

The group was returning from the Soweto Pride event which took place on Saturday when the alleged incident took place.

According to one of the group members, Tokyo, 8 of them were followed by a small of group of men who were whistling and making comments in Zulu as they entered the taxi rank.

The group of men who are believed to be taxi drivers reportedly continued to verbally abuse the dance crew members even after they had gotten into a taxi.

“They began rocking the taxi, trying to flip it over”, says Tokyo who described the incident as ‘very scary’.

The commotion eventually came to an end after another taxi driver came to the group’s rescue and demanded that the crowd disperse.

The Love Life organization, which has recently collaborated with V.I.N.T.A.G.E in an online Pride Picture Protest against gender-based violence, has come out in support of group, urging the City of Johannesburg to ensure that spaces under their management such as taxi ranks and bus stops are more secure.

The crew decided to not open a case against the alleged perpetrators as they “don’t know who was involved.”
