Molefe allegedly asked for R2500 from a local businessman in exchange for business rights in the municipality.

A 53-year-old councillor accused of corruption has been arrested in Brits, North West police said.

William Sello Molefe was arrested on Tuesday after he allegedly defrauded a local businessman, said Captain Pelonomi Makau.

Molefe worked as the chairman of the housing and planning portfolio committee in Madibeng Municipality.

Molefe allegedly asked for R2500 from a local businessman in exchange for business rights in the municipality.

The businessman lodged a complaint and the councillor was arrested.

Molefe made his first appearance in the Brits Magistrate's Court on the day of his arrest.

The case was postponed to Monday, said Makau.
