Varsity first for Veliswa

GOSPEL singer Veliswa Skeyi is fulfilling her dream of getting a tertiary education, and is studying at Fort Hare University in Alice, Eastern Cape.

Skeyi is in her second year of a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in communications. "I did not go to university immediately after matric because I started singing with the gospel music group Lord Comforters, and, at the age of 20, I had my first child," Skey says.

"Now, I'm ready. If I tell my children to go to university, I must have gone through the process too."

Skeyi, a mother of three children aged 19, 10 and seven, says she is grateful to have a supportive husband who minds their home and family in King William's Town while she pursues her education.

At 38, she believes no one is ever too old for education.

Skeyi still performs but prioritises her studies.

"My last album, Sithi Uyingcwele, released last year, is doing well and I'm hoping to release the DVD this summer," she says. - motaud@sowetan.co.za
