"The residents were fighting with people from Eskom and the [Johannesburg metro police], so the police had to fire rubber bullets to disperse them," said Captain Nomvula Mbense.

Police fired rubber bullets to disperse residents protesting at an informal settlement in Kliptown on Tuesday.

"The residents were fighting with people from Eskom and the [Johannesburg metro police], so the police had to fire rubber bullets to disperse them," said Captain Nomvula Mbense.

She said residents were protesting about an Eskom operation to disconnect illegal electricity connections in the area. The situation had quietened down by early afternoon and no arrests had been made.

Police continued to monitor the situation.
