Attack on Tanzanian scribe sparks fear

JOURNALISTS in Tanzania are feeling unsafe after one of their colleagues, Absalom Kibanda, was badly assaulted by unknown men.

Kibandi was flown to South Africa for treatment yesterday.

Tanzanian freelance journalist Erick Kabendera said the attack could have been triggered by the "hard hitting' articles Kibandi had been writing.

"He was attacked while he was waiting for a security guard to open the gate at his house in Mbezi," said Kabendera.

He said since the attack, journalists in Tanzania were feeling unsafe. "We suspect that he was targeted because of his work ... and other journalists could also be attacked," Kabenderasaid.

He refused to disclose the name of the clinic where Kibanda is being treated.
