NWU student in trouble over Facebook posting

A STUDENT leader at North-West University is in hot water over alleged racist comments made on social networking site Facebook.

Jason Mfusi, chairman of the South African Students Congress at the university's Potchefstroom campus, posted on Facebook that: "My grandfather says: 'n goeie boer is 'n dooie boer' [a good farmer is a dead farmer]. Happy Sunday Mzansi."

The youth wing of civil rights group AfriForum at the university took exception to the post and laid a complaint with the institution's human rights commission.

Campus spokeswoman Kiewiet Scheppel said: "We have received the complaint and are investigating."

Mfusi said his lawyers had advised him not to comment but he would not delete his comments.

In another post, Mfusi said: "Must admit at the NWU Potch campus I have suffered immense suppression and segregation, due to my affiliation to Sasco. Yet u ask me if I would give it up for better treatment, my response will be 'never'.

"We shall fight this system so that our children may also one day sleep peaceful [sic] in a changed organisation whereby black voices are heard and not of those of the non-white as Biko names them which persists here."

Stiaan Bruwer, chairman of AfriForum Youth Pukke, said: "This precisely one year after a first-year student at the Potchefstroom campus of the North-West University drowned during the reception and orientation programme and Sasco accused the NWU of racism. Sasco throws about accusations of racism when it suits them. Such statements, made by someone who grew up in a free society, incites racial hatred between young people." - monamat@sowetan.co.za
