Call to help nab rock throwers

AN increase in the number of rocks tossed off highway bridges in KwaZulu-Natal and crashing into motorists has forced the police to offer lucrative rewards in a bid to end the scourge.

Rock throwing from bridges has proved fatal in some parts of KwaZulu-Natal over the last few years.

Police are now asking for the public's help to identify people responsible for fatal acts on the busy N2 leading to South Coast tourist attractions.

Motorists had suffered greatly when passing under the bridges of the N2 Umgababa and Umkomaas on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal. Pamphlets with a reward of R10000 have been distributed to encourage the public to help the police nab the culprits.

The police commander at Umkomaas, Captain Mark West, said the area had suffered a number of incidents of rocks thrown over the bridges in 2012.

Three teenagers, who allegedly threw a concrete slab off the Candella Road bridge on the N3 in Durban in November 2010, are on trial. The trio stand accused of the murder of Siphesihle Zuma, who died after a rock crashed into the car she was travelling in.

Last year a motorist was killed by a brick thrown from a bridge over the N2 near the old Durban airport, while another woman had to undergo reconstructive surgery after sustaining injuries when she was struck on the face by a rock thrown off a bridge on the N2.
