'The K-word was being used repeatedly'

A 60-year-old golf instructor is in a serious but stable condition in the intensive care unit at Sunninghill Hospital after being attacked with a golf club.

Nathan Maluleke suffered a broken jaw and concussion because of head trauma. He also lost some teeth in the attack.

Maluleke's crime was trying to protect the integrity of his workplace - Vodacom World of Golf in Woodmead, north of Johannesburg.

His wife, Busi Maluleke, said: "I had come to pick up my husband from work. I had just arrived and had pulled over in the parking lot.

"As I was getting out of the car for my husband to drive us, we noticed a group that was making a lot of noise, using vulgar language and the K-word was also right up there being used repeatedly."

She said after her husband put his golf bag in the boot, he approached the woman walking behind two young men in the group.

"My husband went there to ask her to tone it down as the language being used was not good for the integrity of the place and was generally offensive," she said.

Maluleke said that as her husband tried to reason with the woman, the elder looking of the two boys turned back and attacked the elderly man physically.

"A scuffle broke out, with other patrons trying to intervene. I did not see what happened but all of a sudden Nathan was on the ground bleeding after being hit over the head with a golf club.

"The woman's husband admitted to have continued hitting him and punching him as he showed off his hands to other people," she said.

Maluleke said, from the pieces of information she could gather, the family's anger was sparked by an employee who had mistakenly stepped on a pair of expensive sunglasses that belonged to one of the two boys.

"The owner of the place, who seems to know the violent family very well, tried to convince my husband not to open a case, saying they would look after him. But I insisted and refused to leave until a case was registered," she said.

Midrand police confirmed that a case was registered last night but could not elaborate on details.

World of Golf could not be reached for comment last night. Staff there said management would only be available today.
