Snake in car!

Members of a KwaZulu-Natal family have described how they jumped out of their moving car after a snake rolled out of the dashboard

Pietermaritzburg - A 13-year-old girl is too scared to get into her mother’s car again, after a snake fell onto her feet while they were reversing out of their driveway.

Megan Volsum told The Witness she was sitting in the front passenger seat of their VW Polo on Saturday next to her mum, Glenda, who was driving. Her cousin, Sheila, 16, was sitting at the back.

Glenda was reversing out when Megan saw a snake rolling out of the dashboard. It landed on her foot.

“At first, I thought it was a rubber snake and that someone was joking around.”

But it was no joke.

She said the snake felt “cold” and “scaly”.

“I jumped to the back and dived out of the car,” she said.

Then everyone started screaming.

She said it was black and grey, and had reddish eyes. “I’ll never get in the car again. I’m dead serious.”

Panicked, Sheila initially struggled to get out of the car, saying: “My door wouldn’t open, so I had to jump onto the other side”.

The driver, mom Glenda, said the whole thing happened in a split second.

'With no time to stop the car', she also jumped out of the car, which rolled a little way before she managed to pull up the handbrake.

“It was quite traumatic.”

Counting her blessings, she says she'sglad that it didn't happen on the road while she was driving.
