Safety and security mayoral committee member JP Smith said the city was prepared to pay R1.9 million a year to fund the salaries of extra magistrates and prosecutors at 11 traffic courts.

More than 80 motorists are fined every day in Cape Town for jumping red traffic lights, it was reported on Wednesday.

The Cape Times reported that more than 30,000 fines were issued for jumping a red light in the city in the last year, out of around 1.5 million traffic and by-law fines.

Deputy traffic chief Andre Nel said the city could not install more cameras because courts did not have the capacity to prosecute additional offences.

Safety and security mayoral committee member JP Smith said the city was prepared to pay R1.9 million a year to fund the salaries of extra magistrates and prosecutors at 11 traffic courts.

"The city has made provision for 100 camera sites which are predominantly placed at intersections with high crash rates. These cameras serve a dual purpose by recording red light offences and speed offences," he said.

After drunken driving, speeding and disobeying traffic signals were the second highest cause of collisions and deaths.
