Lawyer arrested for bribery

He was defending a suspected hijacker

A lawyer was arrested for allegedly bribing an investigating officer, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Tuesday.

Bonginkosi Ngcobo, 49, was arrested on Monday in the Umzinto area, Captain Thulani Zwane said.

Ngcobo allegedly phoned an investigating officer of the Umzinto detectives branch, requesting him not to oppose bail for his client who was charged with hijacking.

He allegedly offered to pay the investigating officer a bribe of R5,000.

“The investigating officer reported the matter to the Port Shepstone organised crime unit and a sting operation was conducted that led to the arrest of the suspect,” Zwane said.

Police confiscated R3,000 cash allegedly used to bribe the officer.

Ngcobo appeared in the Umzinto Magistrate's Court on Monday and was released on R5,000 bail.   He was charged with bribery.
