Doctor tells of treating alleged killer's rape victim

A DOCTOR testified in the Bloemfontein High Court how she had examined a woman who had been allegedly raped by a man also accused of ripping out the intestines of another man earlier this year.

Lentikile Mogeledi, 18, faces charges of murder and rape.

It is alleged that on December 31 last year, Mogeledi killed Samuel Mokoena in Thaba Nchu by stabbing him several times.

On that night, Mokoena, 17, was drinking with a friend at a local tavern when Mogeledi arrived.

It is alleged that the two, who were friends, left the tavern together. Mogeledi is accused of later stabbing Mokoena several times, ripping out his intestines.

This was after Mokoena is said to have refused to give up a share of the money they had allegedly stolen from some foreigners.

Mogeledi then allegedly fled and later met up with the woman, whom he forced to walk with him and allegedly later raped.

Dr Angelina Matsunyane testified that on January 2 this year she was on duty at Moroka Hospital in Thaba Nchu when the victim arrived.

"I treated a woman who had allegedly been sexually assaulted. I conducted a general examination on her.

"She was sober and there were no indications that she had consumed liquor or was under the influence of drugs. I did a gynaecological examination," Matsunyane said.

She said when she examined the 18-year-old victim, she did not find any injuries on her body and private parts.

Matsunyane said her findings could not conclude whether the victim had been raped or involved in a consensual sexual activity.

"In some circumstances victims fear for their lives when they are attacked and when the victim fights back that sometimes ends up with them sustaining body injuries as well as in their private parts," said Matsunyane.

She said since 2005, she had attended to between 50and 100 rape victims at Moroka Hospital. - ntwagaes@sowetan.co.za
