Zuma's son may lose possessions at auction

A 2007 BMW X5 belonging to President Jacob Zuma’s son Edward Zuma is one of many assets that will go under the hammer tomorrow morning if he fails to come up with R1-million outstanding debt from his lavish wedding last year.

The auction takes place at the Sheriff’’s office at 10am in Durban North’’s Umgeni Road.

Zuma’s wedding to Phumelele Shange last year was a R2.5 million A- list affair with 500 guests hosted at Tala Game Reserve, near Camperdown. It was attended by high profile South Africans, including the Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula, former police commissioner Bheki Cele, singer Yvonne Chaka–Chaka and others.

It was later aired on SABC3’s Top Billing show.

But in January, Durban wedding planner Paul Mann, owner of Functions for Africa filed papers in the Durban High Court, ordering Zuma, 35, to pay the outstanding amount of R1,5-million after paying only R1 million in a deposit for the R2.5 million wedding.

He said Zuma had promised he was getting foreign funding, but after the wedding Zuma stopped taking his calls.

After obtaining judgement and attaching his goods, Zuma had paid R400,000 but failed to keep a promise of paying off the balance in instalments of R80,000 a month.

Zuma’s assets were attached again in May after Mann filed papers demanding the balance plus interest at 15,5% a year. Mann went to court again following several broken promises to pay him.

Auctioneer, Sheriff Alan Murugan was not available for comment yesterday and did not respond to a text message sent to him. An employee at the Sheriff’s office refused to comment on the assets that will be auctioned off, bu confirmed that bidding started at 10am tomorrow.

But a Durban man who regularly attends auctions of assets belonging to high profile people — and was also amongst the people who bought assets owned by President Zuma’s nephew, Khulubuse Zuma in April this year — said Edward’s assets that will go under the hammer includes a black BMW X5, two double-door fridges, two LCD TV’s, and two three-piece lounge suites. An amplifier with five speakers, two DVD players, bar stools, camp chairs, a DSTV decoder, two microwaves, a dining room table and six chairs will also be up for grabs.

Edward could not be reached yesterday.
