Metro cop killed

A metro policeman died after being shot while on duty in Hebron, in Pretoria, Tshwane metro police said.

Spokesman Console Tleane said three officers were attacked while patrolling the area, near Ga-Rankuwa, on Tuesday evening.

"They noticed a vehicle whose lights were not operational and stopped it, and issued the driver with a fine," he said.

"Immediately after issuing the fine, the officers were accosted by four men who emerged suddenly from nearby houses."

One of the men opened fire, wounding an officer in the head.

"His two colleagues returned fire and hit one of the men, but they all managed to run away as the officers turned to their colleague and rushed him to Legae Clinic in Mabopane," said Tleane

The wounded metro police officer died after being operated on.

The attackers fled the scene with his gun, but one of them was later arrested in Hebron.

"He opened fire when the officers approached him and was wounded by police's return fire. He was found to be in possession of the stolen gun."

Tleane said a second, wounded attacker was caught by community members and was handed over to the police.

Police were still looking for the other two men.
