Three inmates die as prison truck is bombed

Another 14 prisoners were injured when a bomb exploded inside the truck they were travelling in

PRISONER rights activist Golden Miles Bhudu has called for the compensation of prisoners killed and injured in yesterday's explosion near Johannesburg Central Prison, commonly known as Sun City.

Three prisoners were killed and 14 injured when a bomb exploded inside the truck they were travelling in.

The truck was transporting 36 inmates from the Randburg Magistrate's Court to the prison when the incident happened at about 4pm on the Golden Highway in Naturena, southern Johannesburg.

Gauteng police spokesman Brigadier Neville Malila said 19 prisoners were unhurt.

"The driver heard a big bang. He noted there was a hole in the door and saw two prisoners escape. He jumped out and arrested the two," he said.

The driver then drove to the prison to ensure that all the prisoners were secured.

"On inspection at the prison, it was discovered the vehicle had been blown open."

Bhudu, spokesman for the SA Prisoners Organisation for Human Rights, said the incident should not be swept under the carpet.

"This is a case of gross negligence. The police, correctional services and the justice department need to account as to how the bomb got inside the courtroom and into the truck. Those affected must be compensated and families assisted with funeral arrangements."
