Trial of ex-education MEC postponed

Tenders were apparently for motivational speaking and for assisting matric candidates with their studies

The fraud trial of former education MEC Johannes Tselapedi and five others was postponed until next year by the Mmabatho Regional Court on Friday.

Tselapedi, former provincial education department head Herbert Mweli, and his successor Charles Raseala, would be back in court in February, the North West National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said.

Their fellow accused, doctor-turned-motivational speaker John Tibane, and his wife Ruth, were not in court on Friday.

“Dr Tibane and the wife in their last appearance notified and requested the court not to appear on Friday due to their personal commitments and the court agreed,” said NPA spokesman Frank Lesenyego.

They face charges of fraud, corruption, money-laundering, contravening the Public Finance Management Act, and racketeering.

They are accused of awarding two tenders without following the correct procedures.

The tenders were apparently for motivational speaking and for assisting matric candidates with their studies.
