Four people were arrested on Friday after a woman was shot dead in KwaMashu, north of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal police said.
“The suspects were picked up in Inanda. They will be charged with one count of murder and three counts of attempted murder,” Colonel Jay Naicker said.
Cebisile Shezi, 31, who was wearing an IFP T-shirt, was shot dead near the Thembalihle train station in KwaMashu last Saturday.
In a separate incident, another woman was grazed in the face by a bullet and taken by police to hospital.
Naicker said he could not give details of the three people who had opened cases of attempted murder.
Shezi was shot after Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa addressed Inkatha Freedom Party members, urging them to remain calm after the party’s councillor was kidnapped.
IFP councillor Themba Xulu was abducted from his home in KwaMashu’s A-Section last Friday, allegedly by five men posing as policemen. His body was discovered on Sunday in an area known as eTafulene, near Durban.
“All four suspects will remain in custody pending their court appearance on Monday in the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court,” he said.
The state intended to oppose bail because of the seriousness of the charges and the ongoing investigations.
