Video row hits school

VIDEO footage of an altercation between a pupil and a principal's wife at a local school is doing the rounds in Bronkhorstspruit in Gauteng.

The video, captured by a pupil on a cellphone, shows the wife of the principal manhandling a Grade 10 girl and the girl retaliating by grabbing the woman.

The incident occurred at the Cultura High School in Bronkhorstspruit, Gauteng, on August 13 after a teacher allegedly accused the girl of tearing up a book.

Pupils told Sowetan the principal's wife was "always at the school".

The pupil was charged at a disciplinary hearing, which will sit again next week, with assault, threatening, disrupting and frustrating teaching or learning in a class.

The Cultura High School's principal, Johann Hermanus Els, declined to comment.

The school governing body chairman Barry Mashego said he would give the Gauteng education department a full report after the hearing.

The department condemned the incident, saying the head of the department was investigating the matter.

Spokesman Charles Phahlane said: "No one who is not a teacher or a parent with an appointment is allowed on school premises during school hours."
