A MAN has been arrested and police in Seshego, Limpopo, are investigating a case of assault against an Independent Electoral Commission official after a scuffle about Julius Malema.
The incident happened on Wednesday during the Polokwane municipality's Ward 13 by-elections.
A scuffle broke out when a group opposed to expelled ANC Youth League president Malema raised concerns about election officials allowing the deposed leader to jump a queue to cast his vote.
Led by outspoken Malema opponent Boy Mamabolo, the group charged at the officials, demanding to know why Malema was given special treatment.
Malema was with his grandmother, 83-year-old Sarah Malema, and bodyguards when he arrived to cast his vote at Mponegele Primary School in Seshego.
Mamabolo said Ndavhe Ramakuela, an IEC official representing the Polokwane municipality, grabbed him and pushed him .
Mamabolo later laid a complaint of assault against Ramakuela with police.
Police spokesman Warrant Officer Mothemane Malefo confirmed the investigation "against an IEC official". He said Mamabolo had himself been arrested.
"Mamabolo was arrested for malicious damage to property, crimen injuria, assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest," he said.
