MPHO Koboekae from Zakkaria Park in southern Johannesburg left Gold Reef City Theme Park a proud woman after she was chosen the winner of the Young Women Safety Award at the weekend.

Koboekae is the first winner of the award, which is an initiative by the Gauteng department of community safety.

The award is an initiative by the department to influence young people to participate in efforts to combat crime in the province.

Koboekae related how the programme brought hope in her life after spending 15 years without a stable job.

"I was so negative, but this programme has lifted me up ... I now see things differently," a happy Koboekae said.

Provincial MEC for community safety Faith Mazibuko said: "We do not have money to pay them, but we are showing our appreciation with these awards."

Koboekae will also be getting a spa treatment and a mentorship programme with Metro FM as part of her prize.
