Cop accused of shooting teen after car accident

Boy (15) allegedly bumped into her car

A police constable accused of killing a teenager has been released on bail of R1,000 by the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court, the Witness reported on Friday.

Constable Hlengiwe Mkhize, 31, allegedly shot dead Mindeli Ngcobo, 15, after he accidentally hit her car on Bulwer road, just outside Pietermaritzburg, on July 7.

The State alleges that Ngcobo and Mkhize agreed to go to a police station to report the accident, but that Mkhize fired two shots at Ngcobo as he drove away.

Ngcobo’s sisters and a one-year-old child were in the car at the time.

He did not have a driver’s licence.

Mkhize opened a case alleging that Ngcobo had tried to hijack her vehicle and that she had shot him in self-defence.
