A Krugersdorp accountant charged with the death of an 18-year-old cyclist has committed suicide

Wynand Venter, 35, was found in his Noordheuwel home on Friday night, with a gunshot wound to the head, and a pistol lying next to him.

According to Beeld, Venter’s lawyers began negotiating with the State last week in the hope of coming to a plea arrangement.

Venter was charged with a hit-and-run accident involving Merzanne van Wyk, an 18-year-old matric pupil from Florida High School on the West Rand, on July 24, 2010.

Van Wyk was knocked off her bicycle and died at the scene after sustaining serious neck and back injuries.

A witness saw Venter race away from the scene, then briefly stop to close his bonnet. Police found his number plate and arrested him.
