Suspended National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) prosecutor Glynnis Breytenbach accused her seniors of ulterior motives.
According to the newspaper, Breytenbach believes her suspension -- by acting National Director of Public Prosecutions Nomgcobo Jiba -- was motivated by a desire to shield former crime intelligence head Lt-Gen Richard Mdluli.
The NPA have denied this, attributing it to her conduct relating to cases allocated to her.
Breytenbach told the paper: "[Jiba's] real purpose was to stop me from prosecuting a senior police officer [Mdluli]... on charges of fraud and corruption".
The Witness reported that Breytenbach, in a letter to Jiba, said that Mdluli and his co-accused Colonel Heine Barnard appeared to be receiving preferential treatment and were not being subjected to the same treatment as others in the police who faced similar allegations.
This was after specialised commercial crimes unit head Lawrence Mrwebi withdrew charges against them, despite a decision by the Pretoria director of public prosecution Sibongile Mzinyathi that there was a prima facie case.
Breytenbach warned Jiba that this could create an impression that Mrwebi was biased or being influenced, which could have implications for the reputation of the NPA.
