Police are investigating a possible link between attacks in Ekurhuleni and the arrest of six people after discovering heavy calibre guns, ammunition and rightwing emblems

The suspects, including a woman, were arrested at a house in Primrose, Germiston, on Friday morning.

Sixteen rifles, stacks of ammunition, 15 swords, two of them with metre-long blades, as well as emblems of rightwing organisations - including the AWB and Nazi Germany's swastika symbol - were discovered.

Police spokesman captain Pinky Tsinyane said the six, aged between 19 and 49, were arrested in the early hours of the morning.

"Following a number of assaults and even a case of murder in the area, police investigations led to a house near a farm where the weapons were found," Tsinyane said.

She said that detectives were probing whether the weapons were linked to attacks on black people, allegedly by whites. At least one murder, including a beheading, was being investigated. Tsinyane said these attacks led cops to the arms cache.

"Police arrived at the house at about three in the morning. The woman alerted the others and they tried to flee, without any luck."

The arrests follow the murder of a 15-year old boy. Tsinyane would, however, not say whether the suspects were involved in the killing. "They have been charged with unlawful possession of firearms," she said.

The six suspects will appear at the Germiston magistrate's court this morning. - selebim@sowetan.co.za
