The Gauteng provincial government (GPG) is to cap the costs associated with official funerals, it said on Tuesday.
“GPG has taken a decision to put a limit on the funding of such funerals,” spokeswoman Matlakala Motloung said in a statement.
“As such, the province is finalising its own policy around official funerals so that there is a cap placed on the amounts spent.”
It was reported earlier this week that two official funerals — for Henry Mokgothi in April last year and Bertha Gxowa in October 2010 — cost the Gauteng government R5.9 million.
Motloung said there were several categories of funerals, depending on a person’s stature and contribution to society.
“As these are exceptional citizens, the funerals often attract many people from beyond the borders of Gauteng and indeed South Africa, sometimes necessitating big venues accommodating up to 10,000 mourners.”
She said that in the past the provincial government had been guided by the state, official and provincial official funeral policy manual.
“As the general cost of living has been escalating in recent years, the GPG has taken a decision to put a limit on the funding of such funerals.”
Motloung said the province anticipated the finalisation of the policy during this financial year.
