'Thief left his address details for cops to find'

AFTER realising he was about to be cornered, a suspected car thief abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot, leaving his address details in the stolen car.

Police went to the address in Dobsonville, Soweto, where they found four other stolen vehicles.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said last night that police conducting a crime-busting operation on Friday night tried to stop a car in Dobsonville, but the driver sped off.

"A high-speed chase ensued. Realising that police were hot on his heels, he abandoned the vehicle and disappeared in the darkness. When searching the car, police found the man's address. They later discovered four other stolen cars in his yard," Makhubela said.

He said the vehicles were reported stolen in Boksburg on the East Rand, Midrand, north of Johannesburg, and Honeydew, West Rand.

  • Meanwhile, on Saturday afternoon a gang of robbers tried to rob two stores in Kempton Park.

One of the eight-member gang was shot dead by a fruit market manager. Minutes later, another was gunned down by a "concerned citizen" during a high-speed chase with the police.

Two others were arrested while the other four made off with about R4000.

It all started when the eight suspects entered a fruit market and butchery simultaneously on the corner of First and Vlei streets in Glenmarais, Kempton Park.

"The suspects who entered the fruit market held one employee at gun point and ordered him to the upstairs office. Another employee who was also in the shop managed to call the manager in the office upstairs," said Gauteng police spokeswoman Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale.

"When the manager made his way downstairs, he was met with gunfire. He returned fire, fatally wounding one suspect."

She said when the other suspects heard gunshots, they fled the scene.

Police patrolling the area noticed the vehicle they were travelling in and gave chase.

"The high-speed chase that ensued ended in Norkem Park, where two suspects were arrested and the third suspect was fatally wounded by a concerned citizen.

"The other remaining suspects abandoned their getaway vehicle and hijacked another vehicle which was later found abandoned in Rabie Ridge," Mogale said.

The arrested suspects will appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court on charges of attempted murder, armed robbery, and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
