A primary school principal is being probed for arriving drunk at work in Johannesburg on Tuesday, the Gauteng education department said.

Spokesman Charles Phahlane said education officials alerted by Lead SA arrived at the school in southern Johannesburg shortly after 8am.

They confronted the principal, who spoke to the officials and left the school.

When he returned about two hours later to fetch his car, the officials were still at the school, waiting for him.

“We would not want to name the school at this time, since it would prejudice the investigation, which is at an advanced stage.

"If these allegations prove to be true, the department will not hesitate to charge him.”
