IS ILOBOLO discouraging men from making a commitment to their partners sooner?

Most men thatSowetan spoke to said ilobolo and the economic situation were the greatest discouragement for them to settle down. But Nkosi Mwelo Nonkonyana of Contralesa dismissed this as untrue.

He said young men who feared responsibility always sighted lobola as a problem. He said lobola should never be a deterrent in the African tradition as it was not about material goods.

"Ilobolo is about uniting two families not about showing off material muscle. Those who say they are not getting married because they cannot afford lobola do not know what they are talking about. Ilobolo should be whatever you can afford.

"It is only those irresponsible men who do not want to get married that come up with such excuses."

Nonkonyana blames issuing of social welfare grants to people as the reason most men are becoming irresponsible.
