A MANHUNT is on for six awaiting-trial prisoners who escaped from police cells in Limpopo on Sunday.
The prisoners made the daring escape from the Malipsdrift police cells in Sekhukhune after surprising a policeman who was serving them a meal.
Limpopo police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mohale Ramatseba said the officer was also robbed of his service pistol.
"The escapees were awaiting trial for offences ranging from murder, attempted murder, robbery, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm to stock theft.
"An intensive search has been launched and anyone with information is kindly requested to contact Lieutenant-Colonel Mokoena, who is the station commander at Malipsdrift, on 082-565-7526 or the Malipsdrift police on 015-620-0400," Ramatseba said.
Police have released the names of the escapees. Mpho Matsimela, 35, was awaiting trial for murder. He is a resident of Mafefe in Malipsdrift .
Isaac Marwala Deka, 32, and Raymond Deka, 36, from Mohlahlaneng village were being held for stock theft.
Pontsho Maisela, 29, from Mphaaneng village in GaMathabatha was arrested for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. Kenneth Mohlatlole, 36, and Patrick Makgolane, 28, also from Mphaaneng village , were arrested for attempted murder and robbery.
Ramatseba said provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Simon Mpembe had already established a task team to investigate how they escaped.
