THE Keith Bothongo Foundation donated Christmas hampers and money worth R145000 to two Johannesburg welfare centres yesterday.
The foundation extended the festive spirit to Fourways-based Daily Bread Org and the Witkoppen Health and Welfare Centre. Both charities provide shelter and services to orphans and vulnerable children.
Daily Bread received a cheque for R20000, food hampers and entertainment vouchers. Charmaine McGinley, the manager of the centre, said: "They are absolute angels. Thank you to the Bothongo Foundation. This will go a long way in assisting us during the year."
Witkoppen, located in the impoverished Diepsloot informal settlements, received R30000. More than 100 children stood in line to receive a toy and food hampers from the director of the foundation, Olga Bothongo.
Jean Basset, executive director of Witkoppen, also thanked the foundation. "The children almost cannot comprehend the fact that they all have a new doll or toy. It's really amazing."
"It is also wonderful to know that there are other people in the society who are willing to assist. It's good to know that we are not alone," she said.
The Bothongo group, which has built a multibillion-rand property portfolio, launched the foundation this year to formalise the philanthropic work done by group director Keith Bothongo over the years.
"We are grateful for everything we have received, so it is time to give back to the community. We want to share the Christmas spirit with as many people as we can," Olga Bothongo said.
