Argument over children being returned to their mother

A LIMPOPO grandfather has been arrested for allegedly shooting his son-in-law during a quarrel.

The 42-year-old son-in-law was separated from his wife at the time of the incident.

The couple had earlier had a quarrel over their two children - aged four and six - who had visited their father.

When the children failed to return to the woman's home she went to inform her father who then went to confront his son-in-law.

The grandfather allegedly shot his son-in-law three times after a quarrel.

Montsho Jacob Ntsoane died instantly at his home at Lebowakgomo's Unit S.

The police confirmed yesterday that the 61-year-old grandfather had been taken into custody.

Ntsoane's shocked father, Masetlwe, yesterday said the family did not understand why their son had to die such a "horrible" death.

"I still find it difficult to accept that he was killed by his father-in-law, who was supposed to help solve their problems."

The children's mother, Anna Thubakgale, lives with her parents in another section of the township.

The children lived with her but frequently visited their father.

On the day of the incident, the woman realised that her children were not coming back to her parents' home so she went to demand that they be returned.

The kids apparently refused to return, claiming they were abused at their grandparents' house.

After informing her father of the children's allegations and the man's subsequent refusal to return them, the old man allegedly took out his firearm and went with his daughter to fetch the children.

On arrival the old man allegedly confronted his son-in-law, who was seated with the children in the house.

He asked the deceased why he would not let the children come "home", but before Ntsoane could explain, the old man allegedly produced the gun and shot him dead.

Lebowakgomo police spokesman Captain Mamphaswa Seabi confirmed yesterday that Ntsoane was shot three times. Seabi said the old man was charged with murder and would appear in the local magistrate's court "soon."
