THE mother of a Grade 12 pupil who was fatally shot at his home on Tuesday night described her son as "a peaceful" person who only enjoyed listening to the radio, reading and watching TV".
Raymond Shavana, 21, of Section D in Malamulele township, was shot once in the stomach while lying in bed on Tuesday night.
His shocked mother, Mphephu Joyce Maluleke, said she was unaware of any enemies her son might have had.
Her son, she said, was just a week from writing his matric examinations, which start next Monday. "He used to come home from afternoon studies, go into his room to read and then call it a day," she said.
She said that day he spent some time with her until 9pm before he went to his room.
"He said he was going to sleep since he wanted to wake up early to study."
She said she also went to sleep and was woken up by him screaming that he had been shot. She later went to the neighbours who helped her call the police.
When the police and ambulance arrived, he was already dead.
He was the only one in the family of five children who had gone as far as Grade 12.
"He used to joke that he would make my life better," said the mother, who worked as a domestic in Mangondi, outside Thohoyandou, until she decided to return home because of ill health.
When Sowetan visited the family local ward councillor Lazarus Baloyi and Elias Chavalala, who heads disaster management at the Thulamela municipality, were with the family.
A teacher at EPP High said of Raymond: "We knew him as an ordinary, good pupil".
No arrests have been made yet.
