Farmer in court over boy's death

A LIMPOPO farmer who shot and killed a boy who was fishing at a dam on his farm is expected to appear in court today.

The incident happened in Groblersdal on Tuesday.

It is alleged the 57-year-old farmer found four boys, aged between 14 and 17, fishing in a dam on his farm.

When the boys saw the farmer, they tried to run.

The farmer fired shots in their direction, hitting one in the head and another in the left hand. The other two escaped unhurt.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Ronel Otto yesterday said the farmer took the injured boys to hospital and that the 14-year-old, who was shot in the head, was certified dead on arrival.

She said the farmer, whose name could not be released pending his court appearance, was charged with murder and attempted murder.

In 2001 Tshepo Matloga was shot dead while hunting on a farm near Mogwadi (formerly Dendron).

Four men are currently serving life sentences in connection with Matloga's murder.
