Basotho Cultural Village turns 21 years

THE Basotho Cultural Village, located at the picturesque Golden Gate National Park between Clarens and Phuthaditjhaba in Free State, will celebrate its 21st anniversary tomorrow.

It continues to be the bedrock and custodian of Basotho cultural history.

As part of the celebrations, schools and the general public will interact to learn more about the Basotho culture in particular and African culture in general.

The programme includes exhibitions, storytelling, puppet shows for the young ones, and beating of drums by various cultural groups that live in Free State.

Established in 1990 as a living museum for the preservation of Basotho culture, the village has since grown by leaps and bounds .

Provincial spokesman for the department of sport, arts, culture and recreation, Tankiso Zola, says the week- long programme will culminate in major celebrations at the Cultural Village.

He said museum tours, storytelling, cultural music and dance will form part of the celebrations.

Zola said since it was founded, the Basotho Cultural village has established itself as a living museum.

This is characterised by a variety of daily as well as special activities that showcase the Basotho culture to visitors.

A number of cultural icons in the country will grace the event, Zola said.
