SOUTH Africa's foremost F1 Grand Prix powerboat racing driver Elzane De Jager has died.

She is due to be buried in Sasolburg today.

De Jager, her husband and Powerboat SA leader Christo and their pro pilot son Wynand, were among the pros who coached several, mostly black, amateur trainees as part of the sustainable sports development component of the erstwhile Phakisa Ngwathe Powerboat Racing Festival.

It is a nation-building partnership project of Free State Premier Ace Magashule's office, Ngwathe local municipality, Fezile Dabi district municipality, Free State Tourism Authority and Sowetan. It has also been powered by Phakisa - the sports development and related event component of the Free State sports and recreation department.

De Jager started racing in 2004. In 2008 she finished among the top three. In 2009 she won the South African F1 Grand Prix.

Semiprofessional racers Siphiwe Sam, Terance Nkonyeni, Panya Phadi and Modise Molefe, together with the 16 amateurs from Parys, Heilbron, Vredefort, EdEnville and Koppies regarded De Jager as their role model.

Her 16 "darlings" are Sebusiso Madona, Bongani Mvulane, Sebongile Beyaphi, Lebo Malebo, Serame Sekoboto, Puleng Direko, Modibedi Thoote, Sabata Malejoane, Simon Theletsane, Fikile Sephiri, Bafana Dlamini, Rivonia Tshehlo, Nthabiseng Chabalala, Rebone Thabane, Branden Naude and France Sadie.

At the inaugural novices' competitive races in March, the winners were Sibongile Beyaphi, Sabata Malejoane and Branden Naude.

Aspirant future powerboat racing superstars and South Africa's only black pro pilot Steven Zungu of Durban, will train in October over five days from October 2 and for two days in November from November 5, then for competitive racing on November 12 and 13.
