THE Congress of South African Students (Cosas) has expressed doubts over the readiness of pupils for this year's matric exams, which start next month.

This was after Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga said last week that it was all systems go for the 2011 National Senior Certificate exam s starting on October 24 and run until December 1.

Cosas president Bongani Mani said overcrowding in some schools and threats by education officials to disrupt schooling meant "we are not yet geared".

He said the campaign for quality education was struggling to find expression in Gauteng and Eastern Cape. "As long as pupils shared textbooks and did not have access to computers we are not geared," Mani said.

This year, there are 512029 full-time candidates and 108237 private candidates sitting for the exams. Marking will start on December 2 and end on December 15.

The Gauteng education department plans to start marking scripts on November 9. Marking will take place across 123 marking centres and will involve an estimated 35000 markers.
