A school had to be closed temporarily yesterday after members of two political parties clashed on the premises, destroying property and stoning police vehicles.

The incident took place at Makgatle High School at Lorraine village in GaSekororo on Wednesday night at the Greater Maruleng local municipality in the Mopani region of Limpopo.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said tensions arose when a group of PAC members allegedly attacked ANC members who were holding a meeting at the school.

Mulaudzi said the PAC members had arrived at the school unannounced. They allegedly pelted ANC members with stones.

"Some of the people who were pelted with stones were still hiding on the school premises when we arrived," said Mulaudzi.

He said police were investigating a case of public violence and malicious damage to property.

"We are still investigating and have approached leaders of both the ANC and PAC. We will effect arrests soon," he said.

ANC member Racks Sekgoka said his vehicle was also damaged.

He said the meeting had been called to audit ANC membership in preparation for ward committee elections, which were due to be held next month.

PAC councillor for the area Jeffrey Morema denied that members of his party were involved in the attack.

"PAC members are very disciplined," he said.

Spokesperson for the Limpopo department of education Pat Kgomo condemned the incident.

He said it was wrong that while the department availed its properties to communities, "hooligans vandalised them".
