Leadership denies vote rigging

THE ANC in Gauteng denies that the newly elected Ekurhuleni leadership came to office through vote rigging.

The member of mayoral committee responsible for finance, Moses Makwakwa, was elected ANC chairman in Ekurhuleni during the regional elective conference at the weekend.

There are reports that a faction that supports Makwakwa tampered with numbers of delegates to ensure his victory against contender Bobo Mokoena.

It had been alleged that 241 voting delegates were expected to cast their votes but, strangely, an additional 26 people were granted voting status.

The ANC in the province yesterday dismissed allegations of vote rigging during the conference.

ANC spokesperson Dumisa Ntuli said: "The PEC is unanimous in its view that the regional conferences have been conducted in accordance with the ANC constitution.

"In respect of the Ekurhuleni regional conference the total number of voting delegates that was approved by the conference itself was 268. In the actual voting process a total of 267 delegates participated in the election."

The West Rand region also held its conference at the weekend, with Mpho Nawa being elected chairman.

Tshwane and Joburg are expected to elect their leaders at the end of the month.
