Date set for Malema hate speech appeal bid

An application for leave to appeal against a "shoot the boer" hate speech ruling will be heard in Johannesburg next Thursday, civil rights body Afriforum says

The ANC and ANC Youth League (ANCYL) have said they would apply for leave to appeal the interdict because it bans reference to an integral part of their history.

The civil case was brought after ANCYL president Julius Malema sang the words at several public gatherings.

Following an application in terms of the Equality Act, Judge Colin Lamont declared the words hate speech.

Afriforum had argued the words made Afrikaners and farmers feel threatened.

Confirmation of the September 29 date could not immediately be obtained from the court.
