An Eastern Cape man has been sentenced to 20 years in jail by the Butterworth Regional Court for raping a nine-year-old girl, police said on Thursday.

The 31-year-old man was sentenced on Wednesday, but could not be  named to protect the child’s identity, Captain Jackson Manatha said.

The rape happened in Cebe village on February 5.

The man lured two sisters, both his relatives, to his house with the promise of buying them sweets.

He sent the elder girl to a shop to buy the sweets.

The man dragged the remaining girl to the nearby bushy area and raped her.

She ran away and told her elders, who called the police.
