Apparently the three men were using the floor of what used to be a show house as their sleeping quarters
TWO men died and one survived when a concrete floor collapsed on them in Landida, Stellenbosch, in Western Cape.
The incident happened at about 2am yesterday. Apparently the three men were using the floor of what used to be a show house as their sleeping quarters.
It is believed the men had been sleeping there for the past three weeks.
Witness Vivean Kleyn said yesterday: "I heard someone calling for help as I passed by the area at about 2am. Three guys were stuck under the concrete floor and one of them had his hand raised, asking for help.
"It was a bad sight because I knew all the guys. It took paramedics and the rescue team about two hours to get the survivor, Jerry Denten, out of the concrete."
Kleyn said the building used to be a show house before the development of Landida in the late 1980s.
"The guys took out the sand under the concrete floor to make a place to sleep," he explained.
The other two men would be identified after their next of kin had been informed.
Tasso Steyn of the Stellenbosch fire department confirmed the incident.
"Apparently the men had made a shelter under the foundation of a destroyed building," Steyn said.
"The concrete floor fell on them. One of them managed to call for help and that is how they were found."
