THE Amy Biehl Foundation Trust this week urged kids at the Hlengisa Primary School in Nyanga to read and has donated 100 books to it.

The foundation's facilitator and educator at the school, Nosibulele Tiya, said the objective was to encourage pupils to read to be fluent in English.

"We teach them poems, writing, debating in English and spelling, because we have noticed that there is a learning barrier," Tiya said.

"They can't speak English and we want them to speak proper English."

She said they wanted learners to realise the importance of reading.

Amy's mother, Linda Biehl, said the foundation restored harmony in the communities.

"We are working with 12 primary schools on the Cape Flats because we have limited resources," Biehl said.

She described her daughter as part of the Cape Flats communities.

"Amy was a great researcher. Her death gave me an opportunity to explore the country," she explained.

Biehl described the foundation as being about ubuntu.

School principal Zamuxolo Petros said the foundation taught learners that life was not only about negative things.

"She (Amy's mother) shows that though her daughter was killed in Gugulethu she can convert that into a positive thing," Petros said.

Leaner Anele Mkhondwana said the foundation helped to improve their vocabulary.
