ATM bomb accused in court

TWO men accused of killing a Soweto police reservist during an ATM bombing last month appeared briefly in the Protea magistrate's court yesterday.

Sifiso Shezi, 35, and Hector Mabaso, 29, who appeared before magistrate C Sethusha, had their case postponed to next Thursday for a formal bail hearing.

Shezi is expected to face additional charges related to another ATM bombing in KwaZulu-Natal.

The magistrate told Shezi he would be sent to Newcastle to face another matter on August 8.

"You will be kept at the Protea Glen holding cells until you will be transferred by the police to Newcastle," Sethusha said.

Mabaso will be detained at the Johannesburg Prison, commonly known as Sun City.

It is alleged that Shezi and Mabaso played a role in the crime that resulted in the fatal shooting of reservist Constable Busisiwe Mehlwana during an ATM bombing at a filling station in Pimville, Soweto, last month.

Shezi and Mabaso were arrested after police circulated a CCTV footage of the heavily armed gang.

Police said a gang of 10 men armed with high-calibre firearms held up workers at the filling station before blowing up the ATM inside.

Shezi and Mabaso are facing charges of murder, attempted murder, robbery, malicious damage to property and possession of explosives.

The arrest of the two men has led to the arrests of two police constables who are alleged to have supplied the ATM bombers with ammunition.

The two policemen, Authority Gamede, 29, and Vincent Hlubi, 35, are expected to appear in the Protea magistrate's court today.
