Angry residents refuse to speak to NW MEC

NORTH West MEC for local government Paul Sebegoe left with his tail between his legs after trying to engage with angry Logageng residents at the Ratlou local municipality

Residents on Friday refused to speak to Sebegoe, saying they want nine of their arrested members to be released first.

The arrests follow three days of protest last week, which left a community hall gutted. The residents were protesting over an abandoned housing project and a lack of water, electricity and roads.

Only one suspect, a 16-year-old, was released into his parents' custody. Eight others remained in jail facing charges of public violence and malicious damage to property.

Sebegoe and Ratlou local municipality mayor Victor Mance were accosted by angry residents. MEC for human settlements, public safety and liaison Desbo Mohono promised the villagers that her department would do everything possible to speed up progress on the abandoned housing project.

She said her department was considering terminating the R84million rural housing development agreement it had with the municipality for delivery of 2000 housing units spread across Madibogo, Disaneng, Makgobistad and Logageng villages.

"The termination will allow the department to rectify poor workmanship and incomplete structures in Logageng and Madibogo, and expedite completion of the remaining housing units in Disaneng," Mohono said.
