300 pupils arrive at school more than an hour late

TIRED of being admonished for coming to school late, pupils at Nick Mpshe Secondary School yesterday hurled stones at their school, saying they were fighting for their "rights".

Police were called to intervene in the volatile situation and managed to convince the unruly pupils to go to classes.

Rosemary Sape, a member of the School Governing Body, said all hell broke loose outside the school in Winterveldt, north of Pretoria, when principal Bafana Kheswa locked out about 300 pupils who were more than an hour late.

"They broke into the struggle song and a few hurled stones and other missiles at the principal and community policing forum members guarding the school," she said.

Sape said pupils seldom arrived on time at the school and parents seem not to care - because many failed to respond when the principal called them in to sort out the problem.

"The children stroll in at 9am when they are supposed to be in by 7.45pm," she said.

The principal held a meeting with a few parents after the stand-off yesterday and instructed them to ensure that their children arrived on time in future.

Kheswa referred queries to the Gauteng Department of Education, although he did say that he made it clear to parents that late coming will not be tolerated.

Police spokesperson Constable Excellent Manganyi confirmed the incident, adding that police made the pupils to promise that they would never misbehave again.

Gauteng Education spokesperson Charles Phahlane said, according to the information from the school, the pupils started protesting after a passer-by and a school governing body member confronted them about their late-coming.
