Real cops bust rogue cops

Armed gang robs and shoots businessman

POLICE have not ruled out the possibility that some of their members could have been involved in the shooting of a businessman at his Vaal home yesterday.

Police spokesperson Captain Shado Mashobane said they were investigating where the more than 10 heavily armed men had obtained police uniforms and blue lights.

"We can't rule out the possibility that our members could have been directly or indirectly involved in the crime," said Mashobane.

She said the gang, driving in more than six vehicles fitted with blue lights, stormed into Gary Immelman's house at Three Rivers in Vereeniging.

"The gang members approached Immelman's gardener who was on his way to work. They identified themselves as police officers who were going to raid his employer's house looking for drugs," said Mashobane.

They drove with him in one of their vehicles to his workplace.

"We believe they used him to gain access to the house. They ordered him to open the gate and they entered with him," Mashobane said.

As they entered the house, Immelman's wife noticed that the gardener was followed by armed men.

"She activated the alarm and two security guards swiftly responded. The guards were accosted by the gang and were disarmed of their two firearms - a 3.8 Special Revolver and 7.65 9mm pistol.

"The gang then proceeded to the house where they attempted to open a safe but failed," said Mashobane.

The gang then placed explosives around the safe in order to blow it open.

When Immelman arrived, he was greeted with a hail of bullets.

"He saw the gang wearing police reflector jackets and thought he was safe. The men then opened fire on him. Immelman was shot twice in his upper body," said Mashobane.

"More than six bullets struck his Rolls Royce vehicle but could not damage it because it is bullet-proofed."

The men ransacked the house and fled with jewellery and a cellphone.

Mashobane said the suspects fled in different directions.

One of the getaway vehicles was tracked in Sebokeng where two suspects were arrested after a high speed chase. One was shot and injured. He is under police guard in Sebokeng Hospital.

Police have confiscated a blue Audi A4 and a Mercedes-Benz.

They also found an AK-47 assault rifle and three 9mm pistols.

The suspects are expected to appear in court soon on charges of house robbery, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
