Madiba, Makeba honoured

NELSON Mandela and Miriam Makeba will receive the Golden Image Award in Monrovia, Liberia, on Wednesday.

The inaugural annual awards will take place at the Monrovia City Hall.

Traditional queen and singer Julee Endee said: "The awards are presented to people who have demonstrated integrity in their leadership, private citizens that have contributed to humanity, champions of human rights, the rule of law and democracy, as well as peace makers and developers among their struggling communities are among those that have been nominated ."

Though Liberian, the awards have received nominations from all over the world. Apart from Madiba and Makeba, other recipients include the queen of talk shows Oprah Winfrey who recently discovered that her roots are Liberian, internationally acclaimed German author Michael Yench, Chilean families of mineworker victims and Sierra Leone football star Mohamed Kallon.

Mandela is respected all over the world for his stance against apartheid and the subsequent persecution that resulted in his being sentenced to 27 years in jail alongside other ANC stalwarts.

Makeba, on the other hand, is a classical rags to riches story with a twist.

She went on an overseas tour with King Kong, but was refused entry to return home.

She spent 30 years in exile and came back to face the loss of her mother and family. She had also lost a daughter and two grandchildren in Guinea.

With a song in her heart, she performed until in November 2008 when she passed away in Italy.

Liberia presented the award to Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, who is the first and only female president on the continent, and the US ambassador accredited to Liberia in Monrovia.

Linda Thomas-Greenfield will present the awards at the glittering ceremony.
